On October 30th, musical acts Rufus Wainwright, The National, fun., and They Might Be Giants (among others) will play at the Beacon Theater in NYC for a benefit concert supporting Freedom to Marry. All of the proceeds from “Freedom to Love Now! A Concert for Marriage Equality” will support the organization whose dedication to marriage equality has been influential in gaining support for the cause. Tickets and VIP packages, which include concert and dress rehearsal tickets, a meet-and-greet with the artists, and a gift bag, go on sale September 8th.
Evan Wolfson, Freedom to Marry’s founder and president, stated:
“The key to winning the freedom to marry is raising our voices, opening hearts, and moving minds – and how sweet and powerful when we do all that through music. Freedom to Marry is happy to be a part of the ‘Freedom to Love’ concert and to support such a diverse, talented group of performers who are giving their talent and time to this important cause”
Freedom to Marry has also been influential to the Democratic Party and their decision to support the freedom to marry on the official Democratic Party platform, an announcement that was made just two days ago. The platform reads:
Freedom to Marry: We support the right of all families to have equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law. We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples. We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.
We oppose discriminatory federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection of the laws to committed same-sex couples who seek the same respect and responsibilities as other married couples. We support the full repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.
The Democrats are now the first major political party in U.S. history to support same-sex marriage! To learn more about the platform and the organization, check out http://www.freedomtomarry.org/ and purchase tickets to the “Freedom to Love Now!” benefit concert here.

I bought tickets for this yesterday. Today, I find out that fun. is going to be at Irving Plaza the same night. What gives?
