Apple Unveils Gay and Lesbian Emoticons

by Emma Phipps | June 19th, 2012

Apple recently announced a new set of emoticons, or “Emojis,” that will be included in their new operating system for mobile devices.  The new set features cute cartoons of both a gay and a lesbian couples, right alongside images of straight couples (and a fancy top hat).

Honestly, I’m surprised it took someone this long to think of creating LGBT-friendly emoticons.  The more images of LGBT people are placed alongside images of straight people, the more people will come to realize that prejudice against people in the LGBT community is outdated and ridiculous.  It’s encouraging to see a company as large as Apple advancing this idea, and hopefully we’ll see more and more major corporations joining them.  JC Penney has already done their part by including an image of a gay couple and their child for a Father’s Day advertisement.

So who’s going to be next on the Big Gay Corporate Bandwagon of Excellence and Equality?
